SubVersion Stop 220: What 'legends' have you seen live?

This thread on SC was started 8 years ago in 2005, a year before I was even a member. Quite a testing approximation, what is considered a 'legend' by many or few. It sparked 3 pages of lists though on the forum over this duration.

Jake starts by explaining he saw James Brown live. "In December (2004) I got to see James Brown, and although the event was unquestionably a shadow of his former stage show, I still found it very entertaining. He had a couple of girls who looked like washed up early nineties porn stars or video extras dancing in hot pants with "JB" on their asses. The band was tight enough, but not old-school James Brown tight. He had a percussionist in addition to the drummer which was actually pretty cool. Mr Brown even did more dancing than I was expecting him to, being an old man. I had a huge grin on my face the whole time."

Nirvana, Dinosaur Jr and Lee Scratch Perry are three names that pop up in many people's submissions. Personally I've now added Squarepusher (2009), The Wailers [minus Marley, not my generation] (2010), DJ Shadow (2012). I haven't seen many people I would consider 'legends', probably in part due to the fact I dislike people being termed as such in general discourse. All the same, it's a thread with a plentitude of acts still kicking around some noise, noise that you might like to go and see with someone.

01. Favourite track: Foci's Left feat. Eschaton - Eternal Sands (The Shapeshifter's Reprise) (Omni Music). My favourite track I've completed, complete with a low boom bass sample from the excellent Eschaton. My favourite tune of 2013 besides my own Foci's Left productions is VUM - Laura Palmer . So graceful and emotive with a really trippy vibe that transforms your environment into a wonderland. Scope it from my Bandcamp collection: https://vummusic.bandcamp.com/album/...are-you-animal

02. Favourite album: EUS - Sol Levit (Contradicta). Closely followed by Goldfrapp's "Tales Of Us" - a real return to the form "Felt Mountain" showcased.

03. Favourite label: Time Released Sound. A favourite non-label would be declassifying valuable schizophrenics as violent offenders.

04. Favourite mixtape: 39 - MaudGlyph - LAST Jungletrain Session September 2013. A great female French DJ on the best Jungle radio station.

05. Favourite SC thread: So, DOA is D(OA). Instrumental into getting me into Drum & Bass and Jungle, whatever negative associations I grew to develop.

06. Favourite gig: Bat For Lashes + Nadine Shah @ Shepherd's Bush Empire, August 2013. An electric performance with great covers of Julie London's "Cry Me A River" and Fleetwood Mac's "Rhiannan".

07. Favourite book: Clarissa Pinkola Estes - Women Who Run With The Wolves (Ballantine, 1992 pbk). 8 years have passed and I still haven't finished it!

Besides that: Mongolian Lamb with Egg Fried Rice +- extra chillies. A real kick in the tastebuds with the heat and spices; not even Indian food could touch it this year.

09. Favourite guilty pleasure: Receiving critical acclaim for my first album, "Grumpy Love" on Fluid Radio, plus good reception in Nightshift, Oxford's Music Magazine. I put so much work into it and for it to be well received by those who have listened is a great feeling.

Euphony

01. Favourite track: Favourite of my own is either Pleaides or Cepheus. From other artists it gets more difficult as there’s so much good stuff I’m sent. I’m currently digging Scale – Drummin’ Till Dawn and on a more mellow tip probably ...Erm, actually it’s impossible to answer as it changes week by week, so I’ll just say I’ve been loving tunes by these guys this year: Infest, Cryogenics, Nic TVG, Okee, Limit and Asymmetric, Scale, Aural Imbalance and Indidjinous.
02. Favourite album: Ignoring anything from Omni, I would say the Aural Imbalance – Legacy LP. Although I’ve been rocking to the new Manix LP the last few weeks too
03. Favourite label: Umm…there’s a lot, but Subtle Audio still hit the mark, but this year I’d possibly say OffWorld Recordings. I’m also partial to a bit of Monochrome Recordings too.
04. Favourite mixtape: Yuambits excellent 2 hour mix of every tune from Digitized Parts 1 and 2 really hit the spot for me. Excellent mixing, well thought out structure, blinding overall. The tunes weren’t bad either
05. Favourite SC Thread: SubVersion's End Of Year Charts - Open For Contribution up to 29.12.13
06. Favourite gig: I’ve been that busy with the label and training this year (as well as recovering from injuries thanks to said training) that I haven’t been to any gigs as such. I went to a few beer festivals and ended up singing if they count?
07. Favourite book: Tryptamine Palace by James Oroc.
08. Favourite food (or Snax): Got to be Pizza
09. Favourite guilty pleasure: Being interviewed by K Mag
10. Favourite random moment: Having a few cheeky brews in the afternoon in my local town and coming across the window cleaner who cleans all the windows for businesses round the town and who calls everyone Ken. No matter if they’re male or female, he calls them Ken. He’ll also greet you when you walk by, by saying ‘Morning Ken’, even if it’s the afternoon. I Struck up a conversation with him and he still never let his guard down, and managed to call both me and my wife Ken numerous times in the midst of his sentences
Morning Ken
Ask me again next week and I'll probably have an entirely different set of answers

SubVersion Stop 218: For The Ambient Lovers Reviews 021

FTAL021 - December 2013

Various Artists - Sequence 7
Futuresequence Bandcamp Free DL

"Beautiful" is an overused hyperbole-ace in internet journalism, but Michael Waring's Futuresequence 7 compilation demands it. I initially listened to the release in two blocks of 15 tracks each, and found this perfectly fitted pacing of the whole record. First emotional curveball "A Mist Of Grey Light" by Siavash Amini is rich in the textural hues of A Winged Victory Of The Sullen, but goes further than morose, tanning the flesh of 70s Western soundscapes in cinematic territory. Not just choosing a colour that suits your enivronment, then. Instead, Sequence 7 is chock-full of surprises, like the piano and string accompaniments of Good Weather For An Airstrike's "Tides", that flutters with a steadfast drive. Elsewhere, the emotive "Emori IV" by EUS perfectly compliments the sombre, leaf-treading nature of autumnal mystery that surrounds the release. Overall, it's a complete, recommendable package representing a chunk of new and upcoming artists on and off experimental music.

Slow Walkers - Slow Walkers
Peak Oil LP / DL

As separate personas, Liz Harris and Lawrence English's music has never been confuted with misery. Instead, it relies on solemnity of delivery and patient investment. Their sound as Slow Walkers is permeated by a straddling of outlay with verging into the morose. Take "Wake", the paradoxically-to-title morbid album closer. In unhurried fashion, Harris and English stretch out swathes of guitar reverb into a dense drone. The pacing of the entire work is resolutely sluggish and positively transluscent, like a swan picking up bread from the lakeside but avoiding the hounds of attack that walk in these paths. Through an absence of foreseen optimism in sound, the duo bore holes in the well of ambient music's depth, with a shoegaze bent underpinning. This work never reaches beyond the pace of ice floe, and all the better for it; the transcendental introspection of these producers has yielded much great music over the last decade but in "Slow Walkers", Harris and English manage to convey an accurate biopic of their individual talents as songwriters, and most of all, musicians.

36 - Heather Spa
www.astrangelyisolatedplace.com EP DL

"Dangerous Days" comes close to the somnambulant swoon of Aphex Twin's classic "Rhubarb", while the leading title work is a lesson in restraint. "Heather Spa (Burning)" takes a more concentrated, concentric angle. Swirls of synth woozily lifts the listener. The speed is roughly 90 BPM, a rather uptempo slant on the preceding tracks. For the longest length of almost 16 minutes, this works suitably. 36 is no stranger to synth excursions where drones are lilting phrases, tugging at the attention span. His music reflects ambient's nature of relaxing its audience, but always keeping an undertow of mystery in the hold. His first release for the A Strangely Isolated Place blog, the "Places" series will soon see its first vinyl. If the quality is anything like these tracks, it'll be an essential purchase.

SubVersion Stop 217: Nic TVG - Then I Disappear (Subtle Audio 2xLP / CD / DL) - review 3 for The Wire Magazine

Nic TVG - Then I Disappear - review 3 for The Wire Magazine
Subtle Audio 2xLP / CD / DL

The journalistic jungle revival of the last 6 months, from The Wire's Joe Muggs commenting on dBridge being from a genre long "declared moribund" (drum 'n' bass) by the mainstream music press, to Mixmag's "Jungle is back" article by Alex Jones, only goes so far in counter-measuring that these experimental fusions of breakbeats, sampledelia and Auxiliar-ite (see the Autonomic movement in 2008) genre-crossing never went away. Nic TVG, the Pinecone Moonshine label owner meanwhile has a dependency on drumfunk, one of the many subgenres of drum 'n' bass that combines funk, jazz, jungle and hiphop. Coined by Paradox circa 2004, "Then I Disappear", Nic's debut LP can be observed as a serving of semblance with all these genres and influences.

With "The Clown" a dedication to Charles Gayle's street jazz persona, the hoppy parallels with IDM of "Out Of No More" and the titular "Then I Disappear", Nic dose-drops us with his main surgically-annotated weapon: depth of drum work. Time-stretches on the opening piece "A Mouse Among Monsters" thuds like a polluted heartbeat in LSD-infusion with Autechre-ish synths and whirlwind rides. The pace is stripped back by noir-esque strings that accent on the synths later on, leading into "The Clown" and its nappy-clappy hi-hats and snares. It's the baby of the set, a naive walker stumbling on a jazzy modulated bass, only to be shot in half by filtered breakbeats that cut up the sound space like an angle grinder stuffed with jazz samples from the Davis/Hancock continuum.

Nic's persistent strength on this album, and indeed all of the Subtle Audio label's releases (The Wire's Simon Reynolds commented "original, exciting, inventive" to the CD that was sent to him on Blissblog in 2007) is that he just lets loose with whatever creative (and) percussive trajectory that appeals to him for writing. "Playing Drums As Pads" reverses the placement of drums in the mix in an ideological point of view, and it's little touches like these that keep the reader on their toes of his narrative with the jazz and funk greats of old. So though firmly rooted in breakbeat and drum 'n' bass / jungle BPMs, "Then I Disappear" is certainly not something straying from the systematic of adventure, no matter where he's gone after the 12 tracks have been handed over to Conor O' Dwyer (brother of Second Language's Aine O' Dwyer). And wherever the trail leads, the results are never less than excellent.

SubVersion Stop 216: The Dublings + Mackating @ The Cellar, Oxford - 26th November 2013

The Dublings + Mackating @ The Cellar, 26th November 2013

Mackating are no strangers to the local reggae circuit. The first time I saw them, Christmas Eve 2006, was my first ever gig in Oxford. Tonight they are DJing and the drummer is even serving drinks behind the bar. And before The Dublings commence their set, we're ineffably sated by their back-to-back mixing.

A version of Jean Knight's soul classic "Mr Big Stuff" goes down well among tonight's paltry attendance, ramping the energy following, providing cool contrast to the understated, reserved demeanour of The Dublings, a white and mixed race dub group who are joining them on the decks before they break into band mode.

"Who do you think you are?" sang Knight. A new five-piece group of reggae and dub lovers brought together by the foundations of dub - soundsystem bass weight, party vibes and a vestige to channel Lee Perry through enough red hot vinyl in this, the opening lines. Staccato live drum bursts on one recording imbue the set with a rare urgency to excite. Although the blending isn't trickery-heavy, Mackating and The Dublings start by giving the lungs of dub in relation to its more renowned cousin reggae a hearty connection throughout.

Now, the band: female/male vocalist, three electrics, a drummer, "from the outside in", as the female vocalist sings. An Adele-like register. The incantations "there must be more I can do, there must be more I can say" is resplendent with boy-girl singalong charm it's difficult not to like. Epic poetry percussion peppers our narrative with a punk energy united to electric wah-wah, as they invite us to "keep it on the down low". A punkier vibe then abounds The Cellar, turning in a detour of dub, amping the reservation sensibility on its head in favour of rock-out periods. Contrast between band members who aren't very imposing but make imposing noise is a paradox full of beans, inviting seeing dub being less about aesthetic dynamics and more about weight of the sub sound.

The certainty is: The Dublings shouldn't be off your Christmas card list before long. Catch them as they rise through ranks of the local scene.

SubVersion Stop 215: Buying one record reviewed in The Wire each month...

...is something I started earlier this year after renewing my subscription to The Wire, now jointly with my mate Martyn. (The magazines in fact go to him.)

Anyway, the idea is a simple one. I read through all the reviews — no small task, as they usually run to 20+ pages of small print — noting down records I think I might be interested in. Then I go online and find extracts/clips from these records to listen to, whittling the list down to two or three or six. Eventually I decide upon one record and then go and buy it.

The points of doing this are several:
1) It gives me the impetus read every word of a magazine I've paid for. #moneysworth
2) It gives me the impetus to seek out and (potentially) be excited by new music which I might not otherwise do. #naturallylazy
3) It gives me a small topic of conversation with my mate. #thingstosay
4) It enables me to make a list of them all. #statto

I actually started doing this with the April 2013 issue (#350), but I've subsequently gone back and looked at the three earlier issues to see if I'd inadvertently bought anything reviewed in those as well (which I had); and I've skimmed the new issue (#358) too and seen that I've already bought something from that. So I can now make an entire list for 2013. Hurrah! And if I add three more records (reviewed in 2013 issues) which I've also bought, I can make a proper Wire "Chart". So here it is:

SubVersion Stop 214: Muttley's Dream Journal Days 9-10

November 1 Dream

A whole story sequence of cartoon proportions in a long, affecting blend where Brody, Kurt and Walter attack one another.Walter was trying to catch up with Kurt on a race course only to be wrongfooted. Brody was envious of Kurt's position and demeanour. It turns out Walter and Kurt were conspiring against Brody. Brody went with Kurt up a scoop that took them into a shopping mall. The shutters were closed on the shop and Walter had caught up with them. The dream ended with Brody's throat being 'cut' but not in a damaging way, just a way out of the dream related to my own breathing.

November 4 Dream

I had a new girlfriend with blonde hair, the sister of someone who I used to know on Facebook, but only theoretically. We were getting on well in a speed dating kind of way.

If anything these dreams are telling me to get out there and date, but not be foolhardy about it.

SubVersion Stop 213: Muttley's Dream Journal Days 5-8

October 26

Weird dream. Got too close to a horse's back legs while rollerblading upwards over a bridge. The horse turned into one of our dogs and was foaming at the mouth trying to attack me while I leapt up onto a steel building site frame. I was sampling a new 2CD wedding style DJ CD player. I used to have a Gemini one since 2004 when I started DJing.

October 27

Various forgotten thoughts, outlined by schoolkids drawing on each other in the playground with red pen.

What is it with me and schoolkids?

October 28

Back down South where I used to live. Instead of a good friend working at my local Sainsbury's as she did in 2012, I'd gone into the corner shop down South and she was working in there. I got served by someone else as she seemed distressed.

October 31

A new exhilarating feeling was a car with me in it being driven over a steep incline so that we were airborne for over 10 seconds.

SubVersion Stop 211: Muttley's Dream Journal Days 3 & 4

October 24

This morning I dreamt I was Super Mario mixed with being a fire lizard on a path that was avoiding falling into lava, mixed with some flickering imagery throughout the night.

October 25

Spider mixed with a kid at school's muted voice that seemed to invoke some criticism of the situation.

A big bee trying to sting me, only for me to zap it with a cartoon gun so that it would fly away.

Naked schoolkids running around the street outside our old house down South at night with the streetlights on.

SubVersion Stop 210: Muttley joins www.organicbeats.co.uk with the 'Basal Sounds' article series

'Basal Sounds' is ultimately a column for music that hits you in the chest - basal being doctor terminology to measure heart rate and the thumps of the muscle. It's also kinda catchy given bass music has become so first-rate for catching everything between 120-160 BPM that doesn't quite fit its own genre. As a writer, I, Muttley SubVersion have been covering leftfield drum & bass, jungle, ambient and electronica for 7 1/2 years for over 10 publications, so now it made sense to get involved with Organic, seeing as they're some prime movers alright!

SubVersion Stop 209: Muttley's Dream Journal Day 2

October 23 2013

Jumping over Linda Barker from Changing Rooms' and Splash!'s garden wall, seemingly on the run in a recurring dream.

My sister fighting against me because she was upset.

Being in an unfamiliar city, seemingly Amsterdam, and venturing through a building, to be instructed to fly to top left of ceiling, through the gap to get to a kickboxing class. Kids being taught in the room and the hole kept getting blocked up with dust/sand.

My sister waking me up in the dream by lynching me out of bed.

Playing war games on a dream screen with a Thunderbird flying through the air with fire coming from it's exhaust.

Being in a History lesson at school again and the most popular kid calling something 'gay' in derogatory.

Coming to terms with my seeming bisexuality and knowing if someone like Stephen Fry existed in my generation, that would be nice to have a relationship with.

Various lucid counterpoint exercises with images of IChiOne nights.

SubVersion Stop 208: FTCL Reviews 004 - Abandon - Abandon LP

FTCL004 - Abandon - Abandon LP (Blindsight Records)

Jesu. Slowdive. Cocteau Twins. If these names appeal to you, then Abandon's jetlagged, stoner-shoegaze drones will too. Singer's Umair Chaudry's "foolish pride", his "fear of losing you", says much of the song constructions being slow, steady affairs with light and shade. The guitar's resemble Robin Guthrie's melancholic, depressive diopsy and it shines through on "A Hole That Can't Be Filled", where major chords of electric guitar tread in heavy steps to a dirge of G key vocals, dragging the piece's structure along by its ankles with impressive candour. There are some underwhelming moments due to the pace never progressing beyond a stoner's crawl. However, with narratives like "I can't see the things that pull me apart / Can't deny I've tried / You don't deserve the things I said / That I was blind / It's not you, don't blame yourself, the blame all rests with me" on standout "Not For Who You Are" really strikes the listener with a sense of heartache that's missing from a lot of Avant Rock music of late. Recommended, and Magali Melin's paintings for the card CD case greatly lift the visual/musical synchronicity.

SubVersion Stop 207: Muttley's Dream Journal

Had an idea to make a dream thread. There's already been at least a couple on Subvert (Maff's dreams and Torment's KRS-One dream). I thought by disclosing the universally palpable ones there might be some clarity shed on the meaning of the dreams. There are dream dictionaries too, and this is a first step in trying to document to oneself what all these metaphors mean.

October 1st

I was on a train with memory containers all around me. I was a female hen that got put in a cake by a droid which then got put into a catapult device and that was sending a new version of itself on.

Before I tell of what my hypnotherapist sees in the dream (he trained in imaginal realities and dream psychology) I'll leave it open to you.

SubVersion Stop 206: FTEL Reviews 014 - Volor Flex & Encode - Altiplano

FTEL 014 - Volor Flex & Encode - Altiplano EP
Dark Clover 12' / download

"Altiplano" is wired to the internal organs of Dubstep and Future Garage circa the post-Burial era. Imagery of emerging bonfires, which require a repeat listen, abound the suburban soundscapes like a marshmellow stick poking the flame - sweet in initial flavour, charred in overall propensity. Spoken word overdubs in the post-mix work well with the sounds on offer, as do a keen set of ears for Industrial textures. This is the second Volor Flex I've heard, and the first with collaborator Encode, and they make a fine sound together. What is crucial to their hit rate is a wringing out of a sample set with deft precision, and an orthodoxy in Dubstep 140 bpm-centric tempo. The timbres are not razor sharp, but neither are they blunted, which gives an experience akin to changing a light bulb in a lava lamp: glowing deep.

SubVersion Stop 205: FTEL Reviews 013: Various Artists - The Breakbeat Sound Of Finland

FTEL 013 - Various Artists - The Breakbeat Sound Of Finland
Lightless Digital download

"The Breakbeat Sound Of Finland" has been doing the rounds for a while now, with an increase in subversive activity in D&B responsible for this inclusion at this time. It wasn't going to take long to mention this as the first of its kind: a D&B album from Finland, about Finnish D&B artists. However, "TBSOF" doesn't subdue its characteristic intent, in the sense that the 13 tracks all have solid movements. Unlike milk bottle D&B - white on the outside, full of white boy music platitudes without any of the grit of Black music, where the muscle comes from Funk and House - these pieces, especially Defo's "Culture" in the early stages, herald a return to meaty 90s production with raw breaks processed to just the right level of sub zero chilliness. There's also nods to the best parts of white culture - Techno stability and ferocity, and a recompense to any purchasee who doesn't like surfeits of fusion via diversity.

SubVersion Stop 204: Muttley - 15 MOF Pt. 69 - We Lived In A Garden's Heart (October 2013)

"We Lived In A Garden's Heart" was created before I saw the brilliant film How I Live Now; "Garden's Heart", the first released collaboration between Bat For Lashes' Natasha Khan and Jon Hopkins, being made to close out the credits. It tells the story of Daisy (played by Saoirse Ronan) travelling to the UK to visit her cousins, only to fall in love with the elder and be struck into fighting for her and Piper's (the youngest daughter's)  life, as they are called away in an enactment of World War Three.

I am not usually one for full-on Action or full-on Drama films. But with How I Live Now, an excellent balance is reached. The dialogue that runs through Daisy's split-second thinking in a Surround Sound cinema is beguiling as it affects the overall narrative ("Step out of your comfort zone / Stay focused"). While the body bag scene and the return of lover Eddie's Peregrine to a part of the story gave me gestured emotions in watching on the edge of my seat ("Oh no / Yes", in no particular order not to spoil it for you).

I find "We Lived In A Garden's Heart" to be an interesting mix - for one there's a basic time-stretch done on the tracks past 7 minutes, to 70 BPM - so "Garden's Heart" has been drastically slowed down - and second it's my first mix created in my now upgraded Acoustica Mixcraft software. Mixcraft is an even better program than Acoustica Mp3 Audio Mixer - of course as the price is just over double its feature-set is as according. At £49, you get several Virtual Instruments, (Vsts), it's ReWire compatible, has a great video editor, and has an excellent, easy-to-use-and-scribble interface. I prefer it to using Ableton right now.

Please go and see the film if you can - I caught it on the last showing at my local Oxford cinema last night. The full soundtrack by Jon Hopkins is superb as well.

Enjoy "We Lived In A Garden's Heart". It's interesting to me for a third and final reason: my debut album "Grumpy Love" was critically acclaimed on the well-established Fluid Radio website by one of their most consistent writers - James Catchpole. The last track on this mix, both an emblem for How I Live Now and my next LP, is titled "Love Conquers All (For James C.), after a comment by him in the review's main body.

SubVersion Stop 203: Algiversal Mix 2: Muttley - Busdriver And The Bustling Lyrics Of Mr. ShaoDow

ShaoDow, in hiphop, there's a democratic acceptance for rapping about girls, clubs, bouncing crowds, 100 dollar bills or similar, associative grandeur. How do you feel your music fits or subverts this background?

Music is all about expression, creating, emphasising and/or improving a vibe is all part of the job description.

In my opinion the whole money, clubs, girls angle is all well and good as subject matter for a song but people often forget that there are a lot of other things that you can rap about.

Now I'm too busy to stand around and tell other rappers that they are not allowed to rap about money, possessions etc because if your life revolves around those aspects then it natural to want to rap about them. The issue that I have is that the subject have become so clichéd and played out that an outsider could be forgiven for believing that this is what rap is about.

More often than not rapping about those subjects is the easy way out, a tried and tested method almost certainly guaranteed to resonate with the masses and thus sell and make money.

With my music I'm also about expressing myself but I think that the life that I lead and the way I think gives me the opportunity to look at things in a different way and draw on different experiences.

I rap about whatever inspires me so you may or may not hear a tune from me about money, cars, girls etc but one thing you can guarantee is it'll be unique to me and not made as another soulless pop offering.

Honesty, satire, comedy, sarcasm, intelligence, some of the tools I like to use when crafting my music. In answer to your question I don't see my music as fitting easily into the existing system. I'm not looking to be "the next" anything. My long term goal is to create a niche based on my sound and style and hopefully provide something different for the people looking for something different.

Algiversal Mix 002 - Muttley - Busdriver And The Bustling Lyrics Of Mr. ShaoDow

Busdriver and Mr. ShaoDow speak to my narcissistic, egotistical side, their lyrics pumping me with adrenalin rushes. But they are also two of the most ambidextrously poisonous mental focuses of mine in the past 5 years. Busdriver's lyrics, as I've spoken of before, run around my head very fast at times and cause me a mini meltdown when I'm in a very anxious state. They also accelerate the time that I have to myself, by placing me in an uncomfortable state, where I have to lay down and regroup.

It's like I'm so impressed and enamoured by Busdriver's flow originally that I want to flow just like him, so I focus my attention on his lyrics even more. But because they are mostly incomprehensible to my ear, it frustrates me, causing screaming sensations as the word play is so fast and unfathomably dense. This seems a natural extension of a garbled, stream-of-consciousness situation, where everything speeds up, resulting in a natural expulsion.

Lyrics like "I'm a political pundit, I'm cynical and unfit, for day to day life" became self-degrading refractions in the past five years, whereas more angular, double-time rapping generally causes me a fragile state of mind. Critically, the lyrics are inventive and thought-provoking, from both rappers. However my negative reflections on Hip Hop and Rap forsake much of the emotional resonance of any connectedness I have to the music. It becomes a point of "too loud" / "too noisy" /"too fast" / "too contentious", whereby these qualities are some of the main reasons I don't listen to Hip Hop more than I do.

This mixtape is from the year 2009, a year where at the end of it I had mostly got over my schizophrenia breakdown and moved forward. This mix was created before Lil B did Ambient and Hip Hop combined. The backing track is called "Wilful" and was created for Cole Pierce's blog Presto Samo. On Subvert Central you can find the download link for the backing track, which is purely Ambient and quasi-Ambient. I hope you enjoy this mix from two wildly talented rappers - for me I'm trying to reintegrate it into my life, creating more reality from the lyrics - one step at a time.

FTAL Mix 003 - Muttley - Concrete Wholemeal (December 2012)
Grit is part of a GUI's daily 5
But harm to natural alignment ain't striving
Harm to the book line domino piled
If left to topple the tarsel of flex.

Bread comes in many grains and batches
Except the ones getting ingrained grit
Some so tough I wonder who pack it
And some mouldy I worry men ignore.

The wholemeal grain isn't concrete
It's the mother's milk not silk purse
Silk purse's get clogged in sow's ears
The saints go marching hygenically.

Do they enter bracing though, I doubt
It seems they're too busy finding
A concrete surface for a toaster.

FTAL Mix 002 - Muttley - If Suddenly You Forget Me (September 2011)

FTAL 001 selected works mentioned in each review batch; this instalment integrates DIB's GWFAA recommendation, plus Barn Owl's "Midnight Tide", my prime cut of the year. Not quintessentially Ambient, but enough emotional heft and restrained evolution to validate fusion. From my July 2011 Fluid review:

"Three and a half minutes in, a remarkably shiver-worthy buoying of chords hit you like a circuitboard of tesselating sparks, manipulated cassette recordings adding to the special moods formed. I have heard few works of this kind as moving, almost as if the noise forces response from your neural autonomy."

As rule, FTAL mix content remains topic-lifted, while I've applied Etokle's title from the "Looking Back" Auraltone Music release: "If Suddenly You Forget Me", to highlight my concerns with conversating removed from people's attention thresholds - the rest followed like a proverbial doddle.

01 - 00:00 Thanet - Another Story (Receiving Calls LP, Mordant Music, 2011)
02 - 00:50 Alex Tiunaev - Daylight (Blurred LP, Audio Gourmet, 2011)

FTAL Mixes are submitted every 5 batches of reviews, collating 15 works to mix, in 45 minutes maximum.

"Engaged Or Ejected", set one, has two themes: 1) two tracks playing at all times, eschewing construction's engagement or ejection; 2) pattern recognition prototype for investigating the brain's nervous system through physiological study, and how long it can be kept between the two gates before arousal disintegrates.

As the series builds with additional topic material, so will the concepts and narrative.

SubVersion Stop 200: Music Submissions

Over time, and with the viral growth of www.subvertcentral.blogspot.com, I have begun to ponder how, where, when and why people send me submissions. Via this post you can find out how to get involved, and what it means for you, the listener, label and entity...

Promotional materials I accept

I accept forthcoming albums, EPs or single tracks through my primary music account: muttley_subversion@hotmail dot co dot uk. I already have offers from www.fluid-radio.co.uk and www.tailoredcommunication.com. Any style is worthy, any genre and angle. For your content to have the soonest opportunity of a review or creative feature, please tag your files accordingly, include as much relevant information as possible, and wait patiently.

I accept promotional content from labels, shows and event promoters to further their publicity. I place a negotiable charge of £5 per feature on these materials. This is due to a highly idiosyncratic vision for SubVersion, and the fact that this blog gets 700,000 visits a day. Statistics don't lie, and if that wasn't enough reason for considering the blog as an alternative promotion source, I can show you the all time individual page views count too. This would be, for example, for a concert listing and blurb inclusion.

These materials should again be sent to muttley_subversion@hotmail dot co dot uk with a brief introduction, and then payment, if any to mbucki07@hotmail dot co dot uk address.

Promotional materials I don't accept

- Pornographic content
- Slanderous content
- Call-out-culture content
- In the least unspecific terms, spam.

What this means for SubVersion's future

I'm keen to outline this doesn't detract from SubVersion's future as a very deep, in-depth music, science, politics and psychoanalysis outlet. The agenda remains the same, I simply wish to broaden the content base and give something reciprocally back to entities that have affected me.

Next up: FTAL Mixes 001-004, with me highlighing "Tension Escapes Me".

Be well, and thanks for reading once again.

Mick Buckingham (Muttley).

SubVersion Stop 199: Silence Is Golden

Download

It's a 345 sample collage with a 3 hour duration. I made it from December 15th - May 13th 2011, and besides it being incredibly personal to me, is the best thing I've ever heard. Tracklist upon request. More info:

"The art of remaining mute is one of the keys to personal creative evolution. By speaking out and expressing our plans we often diffuse our need to do. It's as if some of the energy required to produce the creative product is already used up by the words themselves.

Some thoughts:

Never explain to others what you intend to do.
Never submit half-baked concepts to anyone.
If you make written notes beforehand, don't leak them.
Sanctify your working space by limiting interlopers.
Cover up serious projects until they are well along.
Learn to be your own best counsel and private advocate.
Do not be concerned when you talk to yourself."

Robert Genn, Canadian landscape painter, 2010.

Muttley - Silence Is Golden

Creator compiled, written, arranged, mixed.
320kbps Mp3, accompanying footnotes, 3 hour 44 second duration.
345 processed samples, over 200 individual tracks, 413MB.
Select musicians, promoters and journalists worldwide included.
Some underexposed entities in my area: South, UK.
Legal Mp3 stockists, select vinyl, CDs, DVDs, demos, artist, label and publishers' downloads, a capella's, a handful of sharity portals for anything long out of print.
Produced: December 15th 2010 - May 13th 2011.

Ruse: "Honestly Muttley, I have a lot of respect for your enthusiasm and vitality... and maybe if my post was a bit off it's because I'm actually a bit frustrated that you're kind of hiding your flame under a bushel with your verbosity. You don't need to validate yourself - let the work stand alone and it will speak for you. And it's fine to be a bit arrogant. If you believe in what you're doing it's only natural to defend it."

Droid (Blogariddims, weareie.com, Woofah, The Fear) publically, re: my second initiation in 2007.

I've come back better, harder, faster, stronger, and am ready for any critique on the project.

Prologue: Bliss, Void, Tired, Hidden

00:06 / 04:43 Paul Ferrini - The Hidden Jewel (Readings from The Hidden Jewel and Dancing with the Beloved, Heartways, 2007)

"Paul Ferrini wrote The Hidden Jewel to express in a simple and clear way the core concepts of his Roadmap to Healing and Transformation. The CD also features two flute improvisations, as well as Paul Ferrini reading wonderful love poems from his books Dancing with the Beloved and Crossing the Water. Paul’s poetry has been compared to that of Rumi and Gibran. If you have not experienced it yet, you are in for a treat."

00:06 Grouper - Improvisation 2 (free download, All Tomorrow's Parties, 2009)

Liz Harris headlined Cafe Oto, London, in November 2010. Everyone was spellbound. Her book of drawings, "Divide", sold out within three weeks. "Heavy Water/I'd Rather Be Sleeping" remains a watermark, being used in Skins' melodrama. Supported Animal Collective across the States. There's criticism Grouper lyrics are too muffled, specifically in the "Way Their Crept" period, whereby "Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill" bleached that veil, adopting shorter track durations.

00:06 Woob - Repurpose (Repurpose, Bigamoebasounds, 2010)

First 2010 LP from a Subvert Central recommendation. Air-pocket choral ambience in the vein of Ryuichi Sakamoto. The SC forum is a goldmine for alt developments, despite small member quota. Ben Ufo (Hessle), Chris Inperspective (Technicality), Ben Subvert (Pepa, Kyza's debut home) and Naphta (The Fear, my 2006 ATM article ed) used to post frequently. The 2010 Winter forum upgrade saw Ben take on a huge interactive streamlining.

00:06 Oathless - Der Flug (Hawk Moon Vol.1, Hawk Moon Records, 2010)

The Wire did a nice feature on 'Sharity' concepts for 2009. HM Vol.1 was uploaded to free album blog Deleted Scenes, Forgotten Dreams, where you'll find bundles of niche drone, abstract, electro-acoustic, noise and modern classical. Links to buy are spurious. They're necessary, unless you know Google like Kim Kardishian's capacity for artery abuse.

00:20 Foci's Left - Regurgitated Impulses [David Tagg remix] (Audio Gourmet 005, 2010)

My first rendering, sent to a suitable label. Signed as soon as Audio Gourmet owner Spheruleus (Under The Spire, Hibernate) listened. Approval lead to its companion in 90 minutes. Darrer Harper and Spheruleus submitted remixes of the 'A', then Install's David Tagg, who put out The Caretaker's lauded "Persistent Repetition Of Phrases", got back to me. It's my favourite miniature on the EP. "Spillage" was released within three weeks, and blogged by Dave Michuda (Low Light Mixes, an ambient mixtape podcast with 100+ unique followers) and Fluid Radio (a hotspot for Experimedia and Wire's advertising).

"The Audio Gourmet netlabel, run by Harry Towell - a.k.a. Spheruleus- quickly became one of the major netlabels on the ambient music scene. At time of writing, their impressive catalogue presents about 30 releases, most of them EPs, around 15 minutes long, and thus created to fit your daily coffee/tea break perfectly."

"Hidden Landscapes Vol.1" CD review intro by Peter Van Cooten, ambientblog.net, January 2011.

All purchases fund Bandcamp credits, and further CDs.

00:20 Thee Silver Mount Zion Memorial Orchestra And Tra-La-La Band - Sisters! Brothers! Small Boats Of Fire Are Falling From The Sky! (Born Into Trouble As The Sparks Fly Upward, Constellation, 2001)

Godspeed manhandled catharsis, ASMZ prolonging subtlety and songwriting. This opens a 2001 foray on the Constellation imprint. I've modified specfic chords to give headroom to the overdubbed atmospheres and instruments. Collaborator Vic Chesnutt, sadly deceased, features later. Efrim Menuck and co have visited Oxford twice to date.

00:22 Gloria Coates & Kreutszer Quartet - String Quartet No.6: Meditation, (S. Quartets 1, 5 & 6, Naxos, 2000)

Born in 1938, Coates' pitching is "characterized by extremely strict, rigid technical procedures (canonic structures), which are often worked out with unusual musical materials (glissandi). Her music is postminimalist, marked by the tension 'not only between material and technique (an attempt to give structure to chaos), but even more so between what would have to be termed 'sober-technical' compositional principles and the genuine direct expressive power and emotionality of the music." In layman's terms, disorientating modern compositon.

00:58 Leyland Kirby - We All Won That Day, Sunshine (Sadly, The Future Is No Longer What It Was, History Always Favours The Winners, 2009)

James Kirby reinvented himself with "Sadly..." in December 2009, rocketing to boomkat.com's top album of that year. Previous key support was from the late John Peel (Radio 1) and John Balance (Coil). His mashup of Wham's "Last Christmas" as V/Vm embraced parody, whereas "A Stairway To The Stars", in Fact Mag's 'Top Ten Ambient Records', contains some of the bleakest ballroom transfusions I've witnessed. As you'd expect from the title, "Sadly" was drenched with melancholy, but avoided sugar rushes. "Tomorrow's world never came".

01:10 Macc & 0=0 - Bridge Over Broken Water (So Far EP, Subtle Audio, 2006)

Subtle Audio blossomed in January 2011, the Vol.II 3CD compilation receiving 4/5 ratings through Resident Advisor and I-DJ. Mixmag upped the ante with a 9/10. "Bridge..." was Bob Macchiochi's sole collaboration with 0=0, also off the first Subtle Audio EP, "So Far", released in tandem alongside Polska, Fanu, Equinox and Alpha Omega 12's since 2005. "Original, exciting, inventive" praise from Simon Reynolds (Energy Flash / Rip It Up And Start Again) via Blissblog, plays from Mary Anne Hobbs on her now defunct Radio 1 Experimental slot, and purchases from Barry Lynn (Boxcutter) and various underground DJs. Aphex Twin licensed Macc & dgoHn's "Some Shit Saaink" to Rephlex in 2009; the muso-intellectuals might start wiping the jizz off their Rusko records yet. Macc works with Ben Subvert at SC Mastering now, full time, and has over 15 years experience getting stuff shinier than Justin Bieber's visage. "Punctuality" by 0=0 was scheduled by Planet Mu for 2009.

01:44 Johnann Johannson - City Building [Alternative Version] (And In The Endless Pause There Came The Sound Of Bees, Type, 2009)

Modern classical grew out of love for electronics, contemporary composition, and a distaste for highbrow snobbishness. On talkclassical.com in October 2010, a user declared, "Classical music lovers stumble upon a classical forum, they see the Eno's (Roger), and leave, hoping to find a forum that offers discussion of classical music", in response to SubVersion's second planned show. He'd probably discard Johannson for some pseudo-caveat too.

Hauschka: "From my rather distanced point of view, it seems that the classical music scene has tried to prevent the 'watering down' of its genre, closing itself off to modernisation and new influences. I have sometimes had the impression that too little has been invested in young rebellious composers, while what has been amassed over 400 years is being continuously rehashed up to the point where these young composers go somewhere else. This doesn't have to be, as there's a lot going on in classical music."

"City Building", in both versions, is very fine. String quartets usurp revolution, but through the richness of Johann's type instalment, you can't help but be moved.

02:33 Jan Linton - Track 6 (CD-R, unreleased, 2010)

Last work on a demo I was sent. Linton is primarily based in Japan, however UK raised. He's had an illustrious, if underexposed career, producing alongside Duran Duran's John Taylor and "Pavillons" creator Bill Nelson. There is a double CD of re-interpreted sounds from the Buddha Machine out through Entropy Records, including the four-stringed Chinese Zhongruan.

02:52 Brian Eno - Copyright (The Dick Flash interview, video to audio conversion, 2010)
03:18 Marcus Noble - I'm On The Phone (A Day In The Life Of Some London Chicks, Noble Television cartoon, 2010)
03:23 / 04:19 Busdriver - Stylin' Under Pressure (Temporary Forever, Temporary Whatever, 2002)

Brian's logic here mocks The Sun's intellect: it's alright for Wayne Rooney to pick a fight with the milkman because 'he stole my last teabag'. Impromptu pantomime - artists have to make a living, but infringement has been hospitable for longer than the blank cassette. I feel a bit annoyed I didn't illegally download "Small Craft On A Milk Sea", as my desired christmas present was a sausage dog BMX. We're jesting, surely.

Cutups throughout are light-hearted satire. Noble's cartoon 'Chicks' bookend Eno's excerpt. As soon as a disagreement is projected, that figure: "He's dumped me (tears ensue)" is reality. It's directed at primitive industry bosses (majors, publishers) as well as those in the relationships of youth, yore, for expressing offence to a suggestion. Prevalent beyond teens, and a reason to not have a lot of male/female contacts: "I love how they can switch off their feelings like a lightswitch (meaning they never really had any in the first place)" said one user on dogsonacid.com regarding females in 2009.

Typecasts dissimilar with populism in all forms: 'selling out', 'lowest-common denominator', though, ignore that the world isn't black and white. It's comparable to calling something 'gay' when sexuality and happiness aren't involved. Degrading language invites degradation of social structure. And we don't need any more milkmen who steal celebrities' tea bags, do we?

03:26 Olafur Arnalds - Ert Jrin (...And They Have Escaped The Weight Of Darkness, Erased Tapes, 2010)
03:50 Library Tapes - Enslig (Like Green Grass Against A Blue Sky, Auetic, 2010)

Two excellent young instrumentalists, Arnalds building strings around piano, David Wennigren overlaying field recordings. For polarised playing style, gander at Conlon Nancarrow's haphazard's key stampede. Library Tapes will be touring Europe in Winter 2011 with Wild Dogs In Winter, who achieved best demo accolades from Fat Cat (Sigur Ros, Max Richter, V/Vm, Hauschka) with their inaugural EP. I bought six of David's CDs after he performed at St. Michael's Church. Auetic is pure DIY.

03:52 / 07:45 Naomi Klein - Doing My Best To Blend In / Treat Me As An Old Friend (The Shock Doctrine: The Rise Of Disaster Capitalism, read by Jennifer Wiltzie, 2008)

What gives 'The Shock Doctrine' early charm, is easily readable prose. I rarely study paperbacks, so that's where audiobooks are great. Naomi excluded, antiquated 'education' should be left to patronising academics.

03:53 Steve Roach - Something In Tears (Quiet Music, Fortuna, 1988)
03:54 Greg Haines vs. Grouper - Where It's Tired (Slumber Tides, Miasmah, 2006 / Way Their Crept, Type, 2007)
04:05 Godflesh - Flowers (Merciless, Earache, 1994)
04:16 / 07:37 / 07:50 PJ Harvey - Too Close To Home / My Biggest Fear / Purposefully (interview, BBC, 1995)
04:24 Stephen Fry - Self-Pity (The Secret Life Of The Manic Depressive, BBC 2 Documentary, 2007)

"I almost wanted, once, to publish a self-help book saying 'How to be happy' by Stephen Fry. 'Guaranteed success'. And people buy this huge book and it´s all blank pages and the first page would just say 'Stop feeling sorry for yourself and you will be happy. Use the rest of the book to write down your interesting thoughts and drawings'. That´s what the book would be and it would be true."

Regularly tormenting yourself with insecurity, paranoia and untrustworthiness via the internet is disingenous, moreover if you resign. A good female friend I met through the web restored balance in late 2010: "Whether you are male or female, if you are manipulative, opportunistic and selfish, you're a wanker and you don't deserve friends until you can earn them, end of. When I was younger I used to be impressed by successful or just plain confident people. Now I'm older, and thoughtfulness and humility are the only traits I look for in people I want to spend my time with."

Cognitive self-help is useful, and if several didn't cry out, we'd lose them. A heavily publicised death in the Drum & Bass scene after 2000 was Graham March, who produced as Desimal. He suffered intolerable schizophrenia, and tragically committed suicide at 26. Such situations are increasingly common, and serve as a reminder that if loss doesn't happen today, harsh truth arises - it could happen at any other time.

04:41 Bvdub - Descent To The End (The Art Of Dying Alone, Glacial Movements, 2010)

TDD's interview with Alessandro Tedeschi (Netherworld, GM owner) was pending in 2007, but he had his hands full. Rameses III's Spencer Grady did a good job in December 2010 for Dust magazine, Rock'a'Rolla before him. Exceeding four articles online previously, mainly in Italian. Discovered thanks to Jim Haynes' review of Mick Harris' "Like A Slow River" as Lull. Here I'll focus on dropping Brock Van Wey's "The Art Of Dying Alone", an accessible, characteristically glacial record that ditches completely isolationist approaches in favour of sweeter, changeable melody.

04:59 / 06:54 Chef, Kyle & Cartman - Come With Us (Timmy 2000, South Park Episode 51, 2000)
05:01 Genesis - Silent Sorrow In Empty Boats (The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, Charisma, 1974)
05:04 Rik Mayall, Adrian Edmonson - How Interesting! (Bottom Series Two Episode One, BBC 2, 1992)

If you've actually read this far, here's the catch. "I am the magnificent Tarzan; I don't address my faults". Nope. Seems lots are happy to do that. Later like breeds like, and we end up with more Tarzans, less steadfastness. Critically, everything smells. It could just be that we're sitting next to Chris Moyles - something's got to give with all those organic lettuce leafs. I've found five minutes signal for alienation, needed to set up the best YouTube misogynist I saw in 2010, and you get to hear a great Genesis tune, far removed from the prog later castigated into pub rock.

05:19 The Residents - Act Of Being Polite (The Commercial Album, Pre Records, 1980)
05:23 Marble Still - Defying The Purpose (Marble Talks About Girls, Noble Television, 2010)
05:34 Burial - Etched Headplate (Untrue, Hyperdub, 2007)

Jonathan Tait wrote for his Subvert Podcast (Episode 15): "drum and bass follows the trajectory of post punk to a large degree." Dubstep is a temporary future of what d&b arranged, and what post punk collectively influenced. For sonic invention, see Loefah. Unique voices in a crumbling infrastructure - Hessle Audio, Naked Lunch. Mount Kimbie and James Blake are your 'post' suffix. Unlike a lot of punk, and post-drum & bass - labelled clownstep, drumstep ("what more amazing genres can we make?"), the trend is producing original sounds. Until it fellates itself within an inch. So, here's Residents merged with dubstep's biggest breakthrough, album of 2007 on countless lists.

Gracing "Etched Headplate", 'crepped' youth Marble has a lot of angst. But contrasting your average bedroom MC, there's wisdom. Expect caustic wit only a pisstaking evangelist can offer, underpinned with those lusty autotuned vocals.

Tait also sent SC Vol.1 to Philip Sherburne six years ago, with the possibility of a review in Wire's Critical Beats section. "I got a friendly response, and then no response at all. Posting about it on Dissensus probably didn't help there" he told me in our 2008 interview. To be fair to Philip, Wire and Jon, you can't discern everything. But when the sole recognisable riposte is another staffer's mention of Photek's "Form" sequel, far past Rupert's groundbreaking period, sacred Picasso impressionism becomes additive for ASDA ready meals: undernourishing, unhealthy, and vain. Still, at least Naphta's "Long Time Burning" was featured. Even if it was misappropriated to the dub column.

"I think he wants a serious relationship rather than a one-night stand."

07:26 / 07:55 / 08:15 / 09:35 L-R & Radiomentale - I Could Never Make That Music Again: Instrumental / Through Accident Or Disease / Outsiders / Attachment (I Could Never Make That Music Again, Sub Rosa, 2007)

Try listening to this LP from start to end. Throughout "Silence", I've adapted its multiple spoken nuances.

07:41 Paradigm X - We Both Are Lost (We Both Are Lost EP, UK Trends, 2010)
08:03 Mary Anne Hobbs - Forge A Path Of Your Own Making (Feeder.ro interview, video to audio conversion, 2008))
08:12 ASC - The Touch [Vaccine remix feat. Riya] (Auxilliary 001, Auxilliary, 2010)
09:44 Kanye West - Yo Taylor (video to audio conversion, MTV, 2010)
09:51 Gavan Navan's Fusion Futurz - You Sound Slightly Drunk (Beckett, SC Podcast 022, 2006)

Paradigm X assembled SC's 60x60 project with Jason oS, which was highest voted by Starfrosch.de aggregator when released. It comprised sixty one-minute tunes of any style. Paradigm mastered Exegene's "Noise Corrosion" CD in 2006, another non-profit exercise spawned from Subvert Central.

Mary Anne was a marmite broadcaster, and used to write for NME when it wasn't ostrich. After Radio 1 Experimental ceasing, 1Xtra's DJ Flight was proposed to take her role. Hobbs currently works as a lecturer.

James and Christine Clements operate on dubstep's fringe, but make fairly conventional tracks that nail the headphones/dancefloor tagline. ASC ran drum & bass label Covert Operations, on a subscription basis, for over two years, putting out plenty of highlights: Cryo's "Girls And Their Demons", Vector Burn's remix of Mav's "Atomic Collision" via a CD split with Warm Communications (see lower tempo offshoot Pushing Red), and ASC's own "Forcefield".

His appearances on dBridge & Instra:Mental's NonPlus+, the Autonomic podcasts, and Vaccine's minimix for Mary Anne in 2007, garnered greatest reaction. Intex Systems, James' defunct alias, crossed from American leftfield d&b stable Offshore, to Covert as a Future Sound Of London-inspired Electronica CD - "Research And Development" - which many regard as his best album. Mindspan, an excellent minimal Techno project with a Covert LP, disappeared up until 2012 with "The Second Cycle", however "Conversations", from an unreleased Mindspan collection "Headspace", made a cameo under the ASC moniker on "Nothing Is Certain".

You'll subsequently find an ASC vignette in 60x60, Vaccine doing live PA's around San Diego and beyond, and a multitude of guest mixes, such as "The Morning After: A Techmospherics Retrospective" for TDD's second zine. James' 'Deep Space' mix series is up to 19, and today he writes music for soundtracks, too: "Liquid Cinema: Music For Pictures" is hitherto featured.

As for Kanye West: a redeeming moment. He should write a book with the byline "How to be geenious and still make a million dollars", ghostwritten by Cognac activists. He's joined by Irish 'discotheque engineer' Ignatius Merangue (formerly Gavan Navan).
